PETER HERBERT – Naked Bass (Buzo Records 508356/Austria) This is the second incredible solo contrabass offering from the Austrian bassist Peter Herbert, who also lives in NYC some of the time and tour constantly. Peter composed 10 of the 15 pieces here, with contributions from fellow bassists Mark Helias, Joelle Leandre and Mark Dresser, as well as pieces by Marcel Khalife and Alexandre Tannous. This disc is well recorded, the bass sounds warm and naked, as in completely acoustic. Each piece tells a little story and deals with a different approach to the bass. I love the way Peter taps on the bass as if it were a percussion instrument. His bowing also has a magical resonance, with notes ringing or humming in the air. What I like most is that all of these pieces have a most melodic sensibility, none are too „out there“ to scare the somewhat more conservative listener. Each of the five pieces by other composers, give an idea of what each of their sound(s) is/are like, without sounding too much like them. An interesting challenge for Mr. Herbert, who still sounds like himself, yet is always evolving and searching for something new. I especially like Joelle Leandre’s „for Peter H.“, which moves in mysterious ways and features some eerie bowing and intense plucking. Mark Dresser’s „for Glen Moore“ is another delight, it is animated work for the great bassist from the group Oregon. A tour-de-force for its entire 54 minute duration. – BLG

Der nach vielen Jahren in New York jetzt in Paris lebende Vorarlberger zählt längst zu den großen Jazzbassisten, was diese Solo-Einspielung nur bestätigt. Kontrabass, Komposition, der Künstler mit seinen technischen Möglichkeiten und seiner Kreativität: Ein pures Erlebnis, das dem Zuhörer zwar einiges an Konzentration abverlangt, dafür aber reichlich entschädigt. Man begibt sich mit Peter Herbert auf die Suche, folgt ihm Ton für Ton, man wartet, wird überrascht und mit vielfältigen Geschichten, die seine erzählerischen Fähigkeiten betonen, belohnt. Neben zahlreichen Eigenkompositionen tragen „Gastautoren“ wie Mark Helias, Joelle Léandre, Mark Dresser, Marcel Khalife oder Alexandré Tannous zum Farbenreichtum der Aufnahme bei. Peter Herbert muß als Komponist und Interpret nichts mehr beweisen und zeigt mit dieser CD sehr deutlich seine internationale Bedeutung als einer der wichtigsten heimischen Improvisatoren. (tHo)

Austrian Bassist Peter Herbert has released this CD in tandem with transcriptions of his partially improvised solo performances, also reviewed in this issue. Experiencing the recording before consulting the scores is recommended. Herbert explores unconventional sonic possibilities in many of the works, and gradually acclimatises the listener to his world, with the opneing track ?Nice Pizz‘ featuring a mere few slpas and tickles. The incredibly groovy ?Slow Octane‘ ups the ante with rhythmic mutings, strums and knocks combining fluently with straight pizzicato, ?Arpeggios‘ is pure Bach on acid, and would be a brave coda to one of the cello suites or gamba sonatas. ?Friendly Fire 1&2′ followed by ?Friendly Fire 3′ exhibit a refined compositional sense, and feature an impressive amalgam of colours and sounds. Naked Bass showcases works by other comporsers: Mark Helias ?Like I said‘ begins with a plaintive theme but soon develops into an impossibly fast pizzicato improvisation. Herbert’s central work, ?Noodle Sticks‘, requires preparation of the instrument by inserting chopsticks bewteen strings and variously plucking, pulling and scraping them. Listening to the alien percussive rhythms is wonderfully hypnotic, especially while methods of production remain a mystery. The subtle nature of many of these effects requires close miking, which in turn renders Herbert’s very breathing part of the musical experience. Herbert’s obvious melodic sense is subsumed into his own mesmeric riffs and colours, with the rattle and hum of ?Noodle Sticks‘ lingering longest in the memory

Nach seiner Beteiligung am Projekt ?Bass instinct‘ bringt Bassist Peter Herbert eine ähnlich außergewöhnliche Einspielung auf den Markt, die jedoch genau in die entgegengesetzte Kerbe schlägt. Peter Herbert findet sich auf ?Naked Bass‘ zum intimen Gespräch mit seinem Kontrabass ein und demonstriert sein virtuos-emotionales Spiel in seiner ganzen stilistischen Bandbreite: von klassisch anmutenden, harmonisch ausgefeilten Dreiklangszerlegungen bis zur absolut freien Improvisation, von der liebliechen Umarmung seines Instruments bis zur ekstatischen Trance. Herbert verschmilzt dabei völlig mit seinem Instrument, welches er mit allen ihm zur Verfügung stehenden Mittel behandelt. Neben den Saiten – die nicht nur gestrichen oder gezupft, sondern auch mal mit Stäbchen getroffen werden – wird auch der Klangkörper des Instruments durch rhythmisches Schlagen mit ins Musizieren eingebunden. Der präsente Atem Herbert’s – mal ruhig fließend, mal rhythmisch integriert – sowie die klangliche Brillianz in allen Frequenzbereichen verleihen dem Projekt Authentizität und vermitteln den Eindruck, als stünde der Mensch mit seinem Kontrabass direkt vor dir. Greifbare Musik! Die Musik verlangt allerdings vom Zuhörer Konzentration und Aufmerksamkeit.
